2. The information we collect
Depending on how you deal with us, we may collect the following information.
Contact and business details: your first and last name, email address, telephone number where provided, business or brand name, and website or social media page.
Project information: the type of retail space you are planning, the type of business, your proposed town, city, shopping centre or area, your estimated project budget, when you expect to make your next binding property commitment, and information about the business or property decisions you are considering.
Scorecard information: your answers to the First Store Readiness Score or other assessments, together with the overall scores, category scores and result tiers generated from them.
Enquiry and consultancy information: information you provide when you enquire, and information and documents about your project shared during an engagement. This may include property particulars, Heads of Terms, draft leases, plans, correspondence, meeting notes, proposals and invoices.
Purchase and account information: products you buy, order and billing details, transaction records, account details, and information about your access to and progress through courses and toolkits.
Marketing information: whether you have opted in to marketing emails, your preferences, unsubscribe records, how you heard about us and, where permitted, information about interaction with our marketing communications.
Technical and website information: information about your device, browser and use of our website that may be collected through cookies and similar technologies.
Other information: anything else you choose to provide to us.
We do not ask you to provide special category personal information, such as information about health, ethnicity, religious beliefs or sexual orientation, through our general forms or scorecards. Please do not include this type of information unless it is genuinely necessary.
If special category information becomes relevant during a consultancy project, for example because an accessibility requirement needs to be considered, we will only use it where there is an appropriate lawful basis and condition for doing so.
Fields marked as required on our forms are needed to provide what you have asked for. If you do not provide required information, we may not be able to deliver your scorecard results, respond properly to an enquiry or provide a product or service. Optional fields may be left blank.
3. Where your information comes from
Most of the personal information we hold comes directly from you when you use our website, complete a form or scorecard, download a resource, register for a course, buy a product, contact us, subscribe to emails or work with us.
We may also receive relevant information from:
- services we use to operate Retail Growth, such as our website, scorecard and payment platforms;
- other people involved in a consultancy project, such as landlords, letting agents, solicitors, surveyors, designers and shopfitters; and
- publicly available business sources, such as Companies House, business websites and professional or business social media pages, where relevant to an enquiry or consultancy engagement.
If you are a third party involved in one of our client's projects, we may hold your name, business contact details, role, organisation and relevant correspondence. We use this information where necessary for our legitimate interests in delivering our consultancy services.
Where we obtain personal information about you from another source, we will provide or make available the relevant privacy information as required by data protection law.
4. How we use your information and our lawful bases
UK data protection law requires us to have a lawful basis for using personal information.
We use personal information for the following purposes.
Providing the First Store Readiness Score and sending your results: legitimate interests in providing the free assessment you have chosen to complete.
Responding to enquiries and preparing proposals: taking steps at your request before entering into a contract. Where you are acting on behalf of a company or other organisation, we may instead rely on our legitimate interests in responding to the enquiry.
Delivering consultancy services: performance of a contract where you are our individual client. Where the client is a company or other organisation, we rely on our legitimate interests in communicating and working with the relevant directors, employees, advisers and representatives.
Supplying courses, toolkits and other products, operating accounts and providing customer support: performance of a contract.
Processing payments and maintaining transaction, tax and accounting records: performance of a contract and compliance with legal obligations.
Sending marketing emails: consent.
Using non-essential cookies or similar technologies where consent is required: consent.
Understanding how our website, scorecards, resources and services are used and improving Retail Growth: legitimate interests in operating and developing our business. Where information is genuinely anonymised so that nobody can be identified, it is no longer personal information.
Protecting our website, systems and business records: legitimate interests in maintaining security, preventing misuse and protecting our business and users.
Corresponding with landlords, agents, professional advisers, contractors and others involved in a client project: legitimate interests in delivering our services.
Complying with laws and lawful requests from authorities: legal obligation.
Establishing, exercising or defending legal claims: legitimate interests in protecting our legal position.
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we consider whether the use is necessary and proportionate and whether your interests, rights or freedoms override our interests.
You have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests in certain circumstances.
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before consent was withdrawn.
We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
5. The First Store Readiness Score
The First Store Readiness Score is provided through ScoreApp.
When you complete it, we collect the information you enter on the form and your answers to the scorecard questions. Those answers are used to calculate your overall readiness score, category scores, result tier and information relevant to your answers.
We use this information to:
- provide your results and email you a copy;
- review your results with you if you ask us to;
- understand the issues and challenges experienced by first-time retail founders, including through aggregated analysis;
- improve our content, tools and services; and
- understand your project if you subsequently contact us about Retail Growth services.
Completing the First Store Readiness Score does not automatically sign you up to marketing emails.
Where a marketing opt-in appears, it is optional and is not pre-selected.
If you do not opt in to marketing, we may still send communications that are necessary to provide the scorecard or something else you have specifically requested. These are service communications rather than marketing communications.
If you give us a telephone number, we may use it where necessary to respond to something you have asked us about or where you have specifically requested contact. We do not use a scorecard telephone number for unsolicited telephone or text marketing.
6. Marketing communications
We send marketing emails to individuals who have chosen to receive them.
Marketing communications may include Retail Growth guidance, articles, free resources, courses, toolkits, information about The Retail Roadmap and information about our consultancy services.
Where we ask for consent, the marketing choice is separate from completing a scorecard, enquiry or purchase and is not pre-selected.
You may withdraw your consent at any time, free of charge, by:
- using the unsubscribe link contained in a marketing email; or
- emailing [email protected].
When you unsubscribe, we may retain your email address on a suppression list so that we can record your preference and avoid sending marketing to you again.
Our email systems may provide information about delivery and interaction with emails, such as whether links have been clicked or an email has been opened. Where this involves cookies, pixels or other storage and access technologies, we use them only where permitted under applicable data protection and electronic communications law.
Unsubscribing from marketing does not prevent us from sending genuine service communications that are necessary to provide something you have requested or purchased, such as scorecard results, purchase receipts, course-access information or replies to enquiries.
We do not provide your personal information to other organisations for their own marketing.
We do not use your telephone number for unsolicited marketing calls or text messages. If you specifically ask us to call you or contact you about an enquiry, we may use the telephone number you provide for that purpose.
7. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to operate the website, remember preferences, understand use of the website and, where applicable, support analytics and marketing.
Cookies are small pieces of information stored on or accessed from your device. Similar technologies can include pixels, local storage, scripts and tags.
Our website currently groups cookies and similar technologies into categories including:
Essential: technologies needed for functions such as website operation, security, logins, checkout and remembering your cookie choices.
Analytics: technologies used to understand how people use the website and how the website performs.
Marketing: technologies used to measure or support marketing and advertising activity.
Essential technologies may be used where they are necessary to provide the website or a service you have requested.
Where consent is required for analytics, marketing or other non-essential technologies, they are only used after you have made the relevant choice through our cookie preferences tool.
Some limited uses of analytics or preference technologies may be permitted without consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations where the legal requirements for an exemption are met. Where we rely on an exemption, we provide the information and ability to object required by law.
You can use the cookie preferences controls on our website to accept, reject or change your choices for non-essential technologies.
Our website is operated using Kajabi, which uses cookies and similar technologies to provide website and account functionality. Other services integrated into the website may also use these technologies where relevant.
The First Store Readiness Score is provided through ScoreApp. When you follow a link to a ScoreApp-hosted page, ScoreApp may use cookies or similar technologies in connection with its platform.
Cookie and similar-technology durations vary depending on their purpose. Some operate only for the browser session, while others remain for a longer period so that preferences, accounts or relevant functionality can be remembered. We periodically review the technologies used on the website and their duration.
You can also control cookies using your browser settings, although blocking some technologies may affect website functionality.
8. Who we share information with
We only share personal information where there is a legitimate business or legal reason to do so.
Service providers acting for us
We use service providers to operate Retail Growth. Depending on the service being provided, these may include:
- Kajabi, which we use for our website, digital content, courses and toolkits, customer accounts and related online functionality;
- ScoreApp, which we use to provide the First Store Readiness Score and other assessments;
- providers of business email, document storage and office software;
- payment and checkout technology providers;
- accounting and bookkeeping systems;
- website analytics and related technology providers; and
- other technology providers used to operate and support the business.
Where an organisation acts as our processor, it processes personal information on our behalf under appropriate contractual arrangements.
Organisations acting independently
Some organisations decide for themselves how they use personal information and operate as separate controllers. These may include:
- payment providers where they process payment information, conduct fraud prevention or meet their own legal obligations;
- accountants, lawyers, insurers and other professional advisers;
- landlords, letting agents, solicitors, surveyors, designers, contractors and shopfitters involved in consultancy projects;
- HMRC, regulators, courts, the police and other authorities where disclosure is required or permitted by law; and
- a purchaser or successor if all or part of our business is sold, transferred or reorganised.
We do not normally receive or store complete payment card details where those details are processed directly by a payment provider.
9. International transfers
Some technology and service providers we use operate internationally or may process personal information outside the United Kingdom.
Where personal information is transferred outside the UK in a way that is subject to UK international-transfer restrictions, we ensure that an appropriate mechanism recognised under UK data protection law is in place.
Depending on the circumstances, this may include:
- UK adequacy regulations applying to the relevant country, territory, sector or organisation; or
- appropriate contractual safeguards, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to approved standard contractual clauses.
Where appropriate safeguards are relied upon, the relevant legal requirements concerning the protection of personal information following the transfer are applied.
Our key technology providers, including Kajabi and ScoreApp, maintain contractual data-protection arrangements relating to the services they provide.
You can contact us if you would like further information about the safeguards used for a particular international transfer.
10. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, including meeting legal, tax, accounting and regulatory requirements.
Our standard retention periods are:
Scorecard submissions and enquiries that do not lead to an engagement or purchase: 24 months from your last meaningful contact with us.
Consultancy client and project records: 6 years after the engagement ends.
Purchase, invoicing and accounting records: 6 years from the end of the financial year to which they relate, or for any longer period required by law.
Course and toolkit account information: for as long as you have access to the relevant product and for up to 12 months after the account or access ends. Financial transaction records may be retained for the longer accounting period described above.
Marketing records: while you remain subscribed. Where you unsubscribe or withdraw consent, we may retain limited information on a suppression list for as long as necessary to honour your preference.
Data protection requests and complaints: normally 3 years after the matter is closed.
Cookies and similar technologies: according to their purpose and appropriate duration, subject to periodic review.
We may retain information for longer where this is necessary in connection with an actual or potential legal claim, regulatory matter or legal obligation.
We may retain anonymised information for research, statistical or business-analysis purposes where it can no longer identify an individual.
11. Keeping your information secure
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorised access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure.
Access to personal information is limited to people and service providers who need it for legitimate business purposes.
Where we use processors, we require appropriate contractual and security arrangements.
No internet-connected system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. We nevertheless take reasonable and proportionate steps to protect the personal information for which we are responsible and to respond appropriately if a security incident occurs.
12. Your data protection rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you rights including the right to:
- ask for access to personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct personal information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
- ask us to erase personal information in certain circumstances;
- ask us to restrict how we use personal information in certain circumstances;
- object to processing where we rely on legitimate interests;
- receive certain personal information you provided to us in a portable format where the legal requirements for data portability are met;
- withdraw consent at any time where we rely on consent; and
- complain to us or to the UK data protection regulator.
You have an absolute right to object to the use of your personal information for direct marketing, including related profiling. If you exercise this right, we will stop using your information for that purpose.
Not every right applies in every situation. If a right does not apply to a particular request, we will explain why.
To exercise your rights, email:
There is normally no charge.
We will respond without undue delay and normally within one month after the applicable response period begins. Where permitted by law, the period may be extended by up to a further two months where a request is complex or several requests have been made.
We may need to ask for reasonable information to confirm your identity.
For a subject access request, we may also ask for clarification where this is reasonably necessary to identify the information or processing covered by the request. Where the law allows the response period to be paused while we wait for that clarification, we will apply those rules.
We carry out reasonable and proportionate searches when responding to requests for personal information.
13. Automated scoring
Our scorecards calculate scores automatically and may display different results depending on the answers you provide.
The First Store Readiness Score is intended to provide general guidance to help you understand areas of readiness and potential issues to consider. It does not constitute legal, financial, surveying, property or other regulated professional advice.
We do not use the scorecard to make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that have a legal or similarly significant effect.
Any decision about whether Retail Growth enters into a consultancy engagement is made by a person, not by the automated scorecard.
14. Data protection complaints
You have the right to complain to us if you believe we have not handled your personal information in accordance with data protection law.
You can make a data protection complaint by:
Email: [email protected]
or by writing to:

If you are not satisfied with our response, you also have the right to complain to the Information Commission, whose office continues to use the name ICO, the UK's independent regulator for data protection and information rights.
Information about making a complaint is available at www.ico.org.uk.
15. Other websites and retailers
Our website may contain links to websites and services operated by other organisations.
Those organisations are responsible for their own use of personal information, and we recommend reviewing their privacy information before providing them with personal information.
If you purchase The Retail Roadmap through a bookshop, online marketplace or other retailer, that retailer is responsible for personal information it collects as part of the purchase. Retail Growth does not automatically receive your personal details from the retailer simply because you purchased the book.
16. Children
Retail Growth's website, products and consultancy services are intended for adults who are planning, launching or operating businesses.
They are not designed for children, and we do not knowingly seek to collect personal information from anyone under 18 through our business services.
17. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time where our services, technology, business practices or legal obligations change.
The current version will be published on this page and the "Last updated" date will be changed when appropriate.
Where we make a material change affecting how we use personal information already provided to us, we will take appropriate steps to bring that change to the attention of affected individuals where required.
